Moments and Memories is a series of group exhibitions AroundSpace newly established, which presents a group of great artworks every year. It reflects the highlighted moments and unforgettable memories of our art journey over the year.
If time has memories, they must be found in amber, which was formed in ancient times from resin exuded from tree bank, being buried underground, and fossilized by the pressure and the heat. A frozen moment becomes today’s gemstone, amber is a gift of time. Although sealed and unseen for millions of years, it captures vivid moments in time and gains value thanks to time. Great contemporary art bridges the promise of the past and the inspiration of the future, not necessarily focusing on adventurous experiments. Like amber, these artworks have been tested by time and proven to be masterpieces, which is the essential value and criteria AroundSpace uses when presenting and collecting contemporary art.
Moments and Memories: I exhibits fourteen artists’ works, including various media ranging from oil or acrylic on canvas, paper-based ink painting, collage, and photography, as well as different subject matters in abstract or figurative styles. These works converse and collide with each other, as wonderful moments conflate in our memories. Alois Lichetsteiner’s snowscape in between realistic and abstract style responds well to Dou Rongjun’s elegant snow bamboos. Huang Yuanqing and Chi Qun use different approaches of abstract art yet share the same mastery of deploying colors. Ji Dachun and Shi Xinji’s superb craftsmanship impress the viewers who may be able to perceive the dance of brushstrokes on canvas. The images of still life and landscapes created by Klaas Gubbels and Kotscha Reist are simple but fundamental, even majestic. Both Ding Beili and Shao Zejiong reinterpret traditional Chinese ink painting with a new language. Tao Yi’s geometric abstract work, Liang Quan’s collage on paper, Lu Dan’s study on cityscape, clouds, and lights, together with Taca’s retracing classic poetry in contemporary nature scenes, compose a magnificent group exhibition.
When we say farewell to the past and celebrate the new year with premium wine and good friends, we are also surrounded by art. These great artworks are like amber, gemstones produced by time. They preserve precious moments we encounter with art in our memories.
