AroundSpace is pleased to announce the opening of “Of Surface and Space,” a group show of recent works by six artists - Fu Xiaotong, Chi Qun, Li Tao, Liu Peng, Lu Dan, and Tao Yi.
Using pure colors and basic geometric forms, Russian artist Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) created his own visual vocabulary and grammar in painting in the beginning of the 20th Century. His signature work, Black Square, redefined the relationship between the surface of canvas and space, and became one of the most influential abstract painting in art history.
The six artists’ work is a continuation of the exploration of conflating the surface and space. They use different approaches and media, push the boundary of two-dimensional painting. Fu Xiaotong’s tireless piercing on handmade paper and Chi Qun’s overlapping brushstrokes and dripping thick paints on canvas created delicate relief, gently breaking into the space. Employing linear perspective, Liu Peng and Lu Dan’s figurative work created the illusion of space on a flat surface. Li Tao and Tao Yi also pondered the meaning of time and space in their abstract work.
Breaking through the two-dimensional surface of traditional canvas painting, the six artists’ work have touched the surface of space, and reached the new depth of contemporary painting.
