AroundSpace is pleased to present The Spirit of Shan Shui, a solo exhibition of Cai Xiaosong, which is the first exhibition dedicated to Cai’s recent works in the last few years.
In his famous essay, Preface on Painting of Shan Shui, the great Chinese painter, Zong Bing (375 - 443) said, the form of Shan Shui is the incarnation of Tao. Therefore, Cai chooses traditional Chinese ink and wash painting as his primary approach to portrait the spirit of Shan Shui. In his large pieces, we can not see complicated composition, nor sophisticated figure or plot, but the shape of mountain that was covered by mist and clouds. The viewer seems to be introduced to a corner of a tranquil world and can feel the transient beauty of Shan Shui.
Contemporary Chinese art is defined as the art derives from both the origin of Chinese culture and the current situation of China. In Cai’s art, we can experience the most up-to-date Chinese spirits and the endless Chinese traditions, where the essential of Chinese art lies.
